  • Why do my Fire Extinguishers need an Annual Service?
Fire Extinguishers must be serviced annually by a competent & trained professional, in accordance with current British Standards 5306. Ideally the company you use should registered by the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE), such as ourselves. However, if the extinguisher has been used, or if you notice any change in the pressure gauge, it should be serviced immediately. Our engineers have undergone strict BAFE and Fire Industry Association (FIA) approved training, so you can be assured that all your fire extinguisher servicing will be carried out in accordance to BS5306.
  • Why are your Fire Extinguishers more expensive than those sold online?
This is probably our most common question. We receive many queries each day that question the vast difference in prices between Fire Extinguisher companies, such as ourselves, and Fire Extinguishers that are sold online. While it may appear that Fire Extinguishers that are sold online are much, much cheaper – a lot of additional costs are not advised until the checkout process or, more worryingly, are not advised to the Customer at all. For example, it most likely has not advised that the Fire Extinguishers will require Commissioning upon their arrival. This useful attachment has been put together by the FIA (Fire Industry Association) who are a trade association that aims to promote the professional status of the UK Fire Safety industry. Their guide explains the true cost and potential risks of purchasing Fire Extinguishers online.
  • What is Commissioning?
Commissioning on-site after delivery is a requirement of British Standard 5306 Part 3, HMO Fire Safety Guidance and is required by insurance companies. It can only be carried out by a qualified engineer once the Fire Extinguisher has been delivered. Commissioning cannot be done before sending the Fire Extinguishers to you and any companies offering to supply Fire Extinguishers with a service label already completed or Commissioned before dispatch should be avoided. Reputable Online Fire Extinguisher selling sites will also confirm that Commissioning is a requirement after delivery. Until a Fire Extinguisher has been Commissioned, we or any other Fire Protection company can carry out the Annual Service on them.
  • How is a Fire Extinguisher Commissoned and why can't I do it myself?
Commissioning a Fire Extinguisher purchased online is carried out (at cost) and involves a full and a detailed review of each Fire Extinguisher by a qualified engineer before andwhile they are being assembled. During our engineer’s visit, they will carry out the following: Confirm that the Fire Extinguisher is in date. Check the Fire Extinguisher externally for corrosion, damage, dents, or defects and is deemed safe to continue with Commissioning. Confirm the Fire Extinguisher has not been discharged during 3rd party courier transit and that the travel Safety Pin and Tamper Seal were still secure and in place. Confirm the Pressure Gauge is reading correctly by way of conducting a Gauge Test. Weigh each Fire Extinguisher to ensure it is within the required range for each type and size of Fire Extinguisher. Check and assemble all operating parts of each Fire Extinguisher including but not limited to; valves, hoses and horns, handles, pins, gauges, and operating mechanisms. Check that the operating instructions are clear and legible. Confirm all results by completing the service label on the Fire Extinguisher that documents the date of the service, the service type completed, weight of the Fire Extinguisher and engineers’ details. Fit a unique Barcode to the Fire Extinguisher to provide complete asset tracking (should a Fire Extinguisher be moved from its location. Where appliable and required, conduct a site survey to position each Fire Extinguisher in accordance with BS5306 Part 8. Complete a ’Certificate of Inspection’ - a legal record of the Commissioning carried out on the Fire Extinguishers which is kept by both yourself and us. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person in a business must ensure that Fire Extinguishers meet the required standards when manufactured and are installed and Commissioned by a competent technician with the necessary training and certification. This is confirmed by BS5306 and any breaches in compliance could result in heavy fines or imprisonment.
